Just one month after being sworn in, Gov. Bill Ritter has issued his first veto of a bill passed by the Democratically controlled legislature.
So, how did this happen?

The dems put themselves in a tight spot and Ritter bailed them out. They should be thankful. Had this bill been signed into law, it would have put dems in increasing peril. It would have most certainly emboldened dems to push for other labor friendly bills (see the RMN article on the RTD push for another labor-friendly bill for more http://www.rockymoun…) thus causing the business community to become gradually more resentful and distrustful of the dems. This would have also given the repubs a key issue from which to campaign on in ’08. This removes one bullet from that arsenal. If you’re a repub today, you have to feel relieved but a bit disheartened. If this bill is a omen of things to come, Ritter will continue to govern from the center and will make it more difficult to paint the dems as reactionary socialists. “Brilliant!”
Ritter goes a long way to cement a second term, R’s can’t paint him in the pocket of a small but wealthy special interest group. Only die hard labor fans and union members should be lamenting.
